Remembering the days long ago when we trudged to school, holding our paper bags filled with valentine cards. There were thirty in the classroom plus the teacher.
Mom convinced me that each and every child in the class must receive a card from me. Oh, how I hated those days.
We each had to bring our paper bags to the front of the class, in single file. There we received a strip of scotch tape and attached them to the chalk tray.
Then to my humiliation we took each card out and dropped them in the appropriate bags. Of course our names were written on the outside in red crayon, so we knew who to give these little thin papered cards to.
At three o'clock our party began. We rushed to the chalk board to inspect our bags of cards. This was the moment....who liked me, and who didn't.
Often times it was a revealing little exercize? If one or two weren't there...what disappointment.
Who knew then, maybe the family was poor and they couldn't buy these types of things. Perhaps the boys only sent to other boys. Why did I have to send them to the whole class?
I didn't even like Karen or Barbara, but Mom thought it was the only diplomatic thing to do.
Nope, this was not a favorite holiday of mine. How many other kids felt the same? Do they still do this?
